Because of the disastrous effects the earthquake had on Haiti in January, there have been several instances where Haitians have attempted to cross into the United States. The Haitians are crossing in from Canada, and from there are coming down to the US, unless of course they get caught. The most obvious reason for these individuals to illegally cross into the United States is to escape the horrendous accommodations right now. The Haitians have been starving and many no longer have homes to live in, so they can't be blamed for attempting to find a better life elsewhere.
The audio clip is an interview with an attorney, David Watts, who is currently representing three Haitians who have lived in the United States previously, and have now tried to enter through Canada. These individuals according to the lawyer, had been ordered to leave the US but they refused to leave. The immigration laws have temporarily changed for the people who have come in from Haiti because there is nothing to send them back to. This is what has made so many Haitians attempt to enter the US, because word has gone around that they will not be returned at this time, and temporarily will be allowed to live in the US.

I believe an audio clip about this topic was a good choice for a few reasons. For one, is important to the nation and two, it is timely. However, the link to the audio clip opens a Web page with many audio and video clips, so I was not sure which one you wanted on your page. I was thinking it is perhaps the first one because that talks about Haitians crossing over from Canada, but I wasn't sure.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it probably would have been a little less confusing if you tried to embed the audio clip rather than link to it. That being said, I think it was a good choice. It's relevant to your blog as well as appropriate timing. It also is new information that I definitely don't feel like I have heard everywhere else.
ReplyDeleteFor WittyBlonde: I included in my post that the first audio clip was the one I wanted you guys to listen to - and it has the same title as my post (I believe). Sorry that confused you though - I thought about that when I put the link in. And, yes you were correct that it's the first one. Oh, and the link that sends you to the web site is the same as the title for the audio clip.
ReplyDeleteFor Bailey: I wasn't sure how to embed the audio clip because I couldn't figure it out...I almost didn't figure out how to link to the page at all. But, I do appreciate the advice for later down the road.
